EXTERIOR PAINTING SERVICES
DC, MD & VA

The DMV's humid summers and brutal winter freeze-thaw cycles are relentless on exterior paint. 5 Star Pros delivers lasting exterior paint jobs built on proper prep, premium primers, and professional application — so your home looks great for years, not months.

PROFESSIONAL EXTERIOR PAINTING
IN THE DMV AREA

Exterior paint in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region faces punishment that most homeowners underestimate. Summer humidity sits above 80% for weeks at a time, UV intensity fades pigments fast, and winter freeze-thaw cycles cause wood to expand and contract in ways that crack and peel paint that wasn't applied correctly. Colonials in Bethesda, ramblers in Silver Spring, brick fronts in Capitol Hill, fiber cement in Arlington — every surface type has its own demands, and we know them all.

At 5 Star Pros, we don't cut corners on prep. Every exterior job starts with a power wash to strip dirt, mildew, and chalk. Then we scrape every flaking surface by hand, sand rough edges smooth, fill cracks and wood rot with exterior-grade filler, and apply a premium oil-based or acrylic primer before a single drop of finish coat goes on. Skipping any of these steps is what causes paint to fail in two years — we've re-done enough of those jobs to know exactly what shortcuts look like.

We use Sherwin-Williams Duration and Emerald Exterior — both 100% acrylic formulas with built-in flexibility to handle temperature swings and resist mold and mildew. Every job gets two full coats. Trim, shutters, doors, soffits, and fascia boards are all included in our scope. We protect your landscaping, driveways, and windows throughout the job, and leave the property clean when we're done. Free estimates, licensed, fully insured.

How It Works

OUR PROCESS

01
Assessment & Power Wash

We inspect every surface — siding, trim, soffits, fascia — noting areas of peeling, cracking, rot, or failing caulk. Then we power wash the entire exterior to remove dirt, mildew, and chalk before any prep work begins.

02
Scrape & Prime

All loose and failing paint is scraped by hand. Surfaces are sanded smooth, cracks and damage are filled, and a premium exterior primer is applied to all bare wood and problem areas. This step is non-negotiable for a paint job that lasts.

03
Apply Two Coats

We apply two full coats of premium exterior paint using brush, roller, or spray depending on the surface. Each coat is allowed to fully cure before the next is applied for maximum adhesion and durability.

04
Inspect & Touch Up

We do a full walk-around inspection before calling the job complete. Any thin spots, holidays, or touch-ups are addressed on the spot. We don't leave until the finish is consistent and you're satisfied.

Common Questions

EXTERIOR PAINTING FAQ

How often should I repaint my home exterior?+
Most homes in the DMV area need exterior repainting every 7–10 years, though wood siding may need attention every 5–7 years. Harsh summers, cold winters, and freeze-thaw cycles accelerate paint breakdown. Fading, chalking, peeling, or cracking paint are all signs it's time. A fresh coat also protects the underlying wood or substrate from moisture damage.
What paint works best in the DMV climate?+
We recommend Sherwin-Williams Emerald Exterior or Duration for the DMV climate. Both are 100% acrylic with excellent flexibility to handle temperature swings, strong resistance to humidity and mildew, and long-lasting color retention. The right primer is equally important — we use oil-based primer on bare or problem wood and apply it every time, no exceptions.
Do you paint brick?+
Yes. Brick painting requires a masonry primer and a breathable elastomeric or acrylic masonry paint to allow moisture vapor to escape and prevent spalling. We assess the condition of the mortar and brick first. One important note: once brick is painted, it will need to be repainted on a regular cycle, so we walk every customer through that commitment before starting.
How long does exterior painting take?+
A single-story home typically takes 2–3 days. A two-story colonial or large home takes 3–5 days. Weather is always a factor — we don't paint in rain or extreme heat, and we build buffer time into every schedule. We'll give you a realistic start-to-finish timeline during your free quote so you can plan accordingly.
