DECK REPAIR
& REFINISHING, DC MD VA

The DMV's freeze-thaw winters, humid summers, and heavy spring rains are relentless on wood decks. 5 Star Pros repairs rotted boards, fixes loose railings, and restores the finish so your deck is safe, solid, and looks great again.

PROFESSIONAL DECK REPAIR
IN THE DMV AREA

A wood deck in the DC metro area takes a beating year-round. Winter freeze-thaw cycles force moisture into the wood grain and cause boards to split and crack. Summer heat and humidity accelerate mold, mildew, and UV fading. By the time most homeowners call us, the deck has a combination of rotting boards, failing stain, loose railing posts, and hardware that's rusted through. None of this means the deck needs to be torn down — most of it can be repaired for a fraction of replacement cost.

Our approach starts with an honest assessment. We probe every board, check every post, and inspect the ledger board connection to your house — which is the most critical structural element and the most commonly neglected one. We identify what's cosmetic, what's structural, and what's a safety issue that needs to be addressed immediately. You get a clear scope of work and a firm price before we start anything. No surprises.

Once repairs are complete, we sand the deck surface to remove any remaining old stain, gray weathered wood, and mildew. Then we apply a premium deck stain or sealer — brands like TWP, Armstrong Clark, or Cabot — products chosen for their penetrating formula and durability in the DMV's climate swings. The result is a deck that's structurally sound, looks freshly built, and is protected against the next few seasons of weather. Free quotes for all jobs in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

How It Works

OUR PROCESS

01
Inspect & Assess

We probe every board, test every railing post, and inspect the ledger board and structural framing. You get a written list of what needs to be repaired, what's cosmetic, and what's a safety concern — before any work begins.

02
Replace Damaged Boards

Rotted, cracked, or severely warped boards are removed and replaced with matching pressure-treated lumber or composite material. Structural repairs to joists, beams, and posts happen at this stage before the surface work begins.

03
Sand & Clean

The entire deck surface is power washed and allowed to dry. Then we sand to remove gray weathered wood, remaining old stain, and mildew. A deck brightener is applied to open the wood grain and prepare it for maximum stain penetration.

04
Stain, Seal, or Paint

We apply two coats of your chosen finish — penetrating oil stain, semi-transparent stain, solid stain, or deck paint. Railings and stairs are finished to match. Final walkthrough to confirm you're satisfied with every detail.

Common Questions

DECK REPAIR FAQ

How do I know if my deck needs repair vs replacement?+
If the structural posts and beams are solid and fewer than 30–40% of the deck boards need replacing, repair usually makes more sense than a full replacement. We assess the ledger board connection to your house, check posts and joists for rot, and test railing posts for stability. We'll give you an honest recommendation — sometimes it's repair, sometimes it's replace, and we'll tell you which is which rather than push you toward the more expensive option.
How often should I stain or seal my deck?+
In the DMV climate, most decks need to be restained or resealed every 2–3 years. Pressure-treated pine decks absorb stain faster and may need it every 2 years. Hardwood decks like ipe or mahogany can go 3–4 years. A simple water test tells you when it's time: if water beads on the surface, you're good; if it soaks in within seconds, the wood needs protection before the next freeze-thaw cycle causes damage.
Can you repair composite decking?+
We can replace individual composite boards that are cracked, warped, or faded badly enough to warrant replacement. Composite decking doesn't stain or seal the same way wood does, but we can clean it, inspect the substructure, and replace damaged boards with matching or comparable material. Some older composite product lines have been discontinued, so we'll assess matching options and give you honest options during the free quote.
Do you build new decks?+
Our primary focus is repair, refinishing, and structural restoration — getting existing decks safe and looking great again. For significant structural rebuilds or full replacement projects, we assess the scope during the free quote and discuss the best path forward. In many cases, a partial rebuild combined with refinishing the remaining structure is the most cost-effective solution we can offer.
