CONCRETE WORK
& MASONRY, DC MD VA

Cracked driveways, sunken walkways, and deteriorating front steps are some of the most visible — and most neglected — problems in DMV homes. 5 Star Pros handles concrete and masonry work that improves curb appeal, eliminates safety hazards, and holds up through the region's demanding freeze-thaw cycles.

CONCRETE & MASONRY
BUILT FOR THE DMV CLIMATE

The DMV has one of the more demanding climates for concrete in the Mid-Atlantic. Temperatures swing from below freezing in January to over 100 degrees in July, and that freeze-thaw cycle is concrete's biggest enemy. Water infiltrates micro-cracks, freezes and expands, and over a few seasons turns a small crack into a spalled, heaved, or sunken mess. This is why you see so many cracked driveways and broken front walkways in Silver Spring, Bethesda, Arlington, and College Park neighborhoods — the concrete that looked fine ten years ago has taken a beating.

5 Star Pros approaches every concrete job with the climate in mind. We use properly specified mix designs for the DMV region, set forms with adequate base depth for frost protection, reinforce slabs with rebar or fiber mesh, and apply a quality sealer after the initial cure. These aren't optional extras — they're the steps that separate a slab that lasts 30 years from one that needs replacing in 10. We also account for drainage, making sure patios and walkways slope away from the house and that water has somewhere to go when it rains.

Our concrete and masonry work covers driveways, front and rear walkways, patio slabs, outdoor entertaining areas, front steps, retaining walls, and concrete repair. We handle both new pours and replacement of existing damaged concrete. Every job comes with a site cleanup, and we're on time and reachable throughout the project. No disappearing acts after the deposit is paid.

How It Works

OUR PROCESS

01
Site Assessment

We visit the site, measure the area, evaluate drainage patterns, assess the existing base or old concrete for removal, and provide an itemized quote with a realistic timeline.

02
Excavation & Form Prep

Old concrete is removed and hauled away. We excavate to the proper depth, compact a gravel sub-base for drainage and stability, and set forms with correct slope for water runoff.

03
Pour & Level

Rebar or fiber mesh goes in, concrete is poured, screeded flat, and hand-floated smooth. Control joints are cut at the right intervals to direct where the slab can crack if it moves.

04
Finishing & Cure

Surface texture is applied (broom, trowel, or stamp), edges are rounded, and the slab is cured properly before sealer is applied. We keep the site clean and communicate the use timeline.

Common Questions

CONCRETE WORK FAQ

How long does concrete take to cure?+
Concrete reaches walking strength in 24–48 hours, but full cure takes 28 days. We advise keeping vehicle traffic off a new driveway for at least 7 days and avoiding heavy loads for the first 30 days. For patios and walkways, light foot traffic can resume after 24–48 hours depending on weather conditions. We seal the surface after the initial cure period to protect against the DMV's freeze-thaw cycles.
Can you pour concrete in cold weather?+
Concrete should not be poured when temperatures drop below 40°F without special cold-weather precautions including heated forms, insulated blankets, and accelerated mixes. In the DMV, we generally pause pours during cold snaps in January and February, but early spring and fall are both excellent seasons for concrete work. We'll let you know during scheduling if weather could affect your project timeline.
Do you do stamped concrete?+
Yes. Stamped concrete is a popular choice for patios and walkways across the DMV — it gives the appearance of brick, flagstone, slate, or wood plank at a lower cost than natural materials. We use professional stamping mats and integral coloring to achieve realistic patterns. Stamped concrete requires a sealer applied every 2–3 years to maintain its appearance and protect the surface from the elements.
What about concrete repair?+
Yes, we repair existing concrete including cracked driveways, spalled surfaces, sunken or heaved slabs, and deteriorating steps. The repair method depends on the extent of damage — small cracks can be routed and filled, larger sections may need removal and replacement. We're honest about when a repair is appropriate versus when full replacement is the better long-term investment for your situation.
