DOOR INSTALLATION
& REPAIR, DC MD VA

Squeaky hinges, sticking frames, and hollow doors from 1985 — DMV homes accumulate door problems over time. 5 Star Pros installs new interior doors, fixes problem doors, and upgrades closet systems with clean craftsmanship and same-day turnaround on most jobs.

DOOR INSTALLATION &
REPAIR FOR DMV HOMES

Doors are the most-touched part of any home — and in older DMV properties, they're often the most neglected. A house built in the 1960s through the 1980s might still have its original hollow-core doors, painted over so many times the edges barely clear the frame, hanging on hinges that squeak every time someone passes through. These aren't cosmetic annoyances; they're daily friction points that a straightforward door replacement eliminates completely.

Upgrading interior doors is one of the quickest ways to modernize a home without a major renovation. Swapping hollow-core doors for solid-core 6-panel or flat-panel doors instantly changes how a room feels — quieter, more substantial, and more finished. 5 Star Pros handles the complete swap: remove the old door, check and correct the rough opening, hang and level the new pre-hung unit, install new casing if needed, set hardware, and paint or prime before we leave. Most single-door installs are done in under two hours.

Beyond new installations, we repair doors that stick, bind, squeak, or refuse to latch. Humidity in the DMV causes wood frames to swell seasonally, and older homes settle in ways that knock door frames out of plumb over time. We diagnose the root cause — whether it's hinges, a warped slab, a frame that's racked, or a strike plate that needs relocating — and fix it properly so it doesn't come back next season.

How It Works

OUR PROCESS

01
Measure & Assess

We measure every opening, check frames for plumb and level, and identify any rough opening corrections needed before installation. Your quote is itemized and firm.

02
Remove Old Door

We pull the old door and frame carefully, check the rough opening, make any needed corrections, and ensure the new unit will hang plumb and operate smoothly from day one.

03
Install & Level

The new pre-hung door goes in shimmed and plumb, secured through the hinge jamb and strike side. We test the swing, adjust the reveal, and confirm the latch clicks cleanly.

04
Hardware & Finishing

All hardware is installed and tested, casing is nailed tight to the wall, gaps are caulked, and the door is left in paint-ready condition. We haul away all old materials and debris.

Common Questions

DOOR INSTALLATION FAQ

How long does door installation take?+
A single pre-hung interior door can be installed in 1–2 hours. Multiple doors in a single visit are common — most whole-home door replacement projects are completed in a single day. Jobs that include custom sizing, casing replacement, or a full closet system may take longer. We give you a precise timeline during your free quote.
Do you supply the door or do I?+
Either works. Many clients source their own doors from Home Depot, Lowe's, or a specialty supplier and hire us for the installation. We can also source and supply doors directly — especially useful for odd sizes, custom finishes, or when you want us to handle everything from start to finish. Just let us know during the quote and we'll factor it in.
What about exterior doors?+
We install exterior doors including entry doors, storm doors, and patio doors. Exterior door installation is more involved than interior work — it requires weatherstripping, threshold adjustment, proper flashing, and careful shimming to ensure a tight seal and secure fit. We handle all of it, and every exterior door installation includes a test for draft and smooth operation before we leave.
Can you fix a door that won't close properly?+
Yes. Sticking, binding, and doors that don't latch are very common in DMV homes — especially older houses where wood has expanded from humidity or the frame has settled over time. We diagnose the root cause: is it a hinge issue, a frame that's racked, a strike plate that needs adjustment, or a door that needs to be planed? We fix it correctly the first time rather than masking the symptom with a quick sand that fails again next summer.
