CAN YOU PAINT VINYL SIDING?
COLORS THAT WON'T WARP

Faded vinyl siding is one of the most common exterior complaints in DMV neighborhoods built in the 1990s and 2000s. Replacing it costs tens of thousands. Painting it costs a fraction of that, and with the right color and paint it holds up well. With the wrong color, the siding can warp within one summer.

WHY DARK COLORS WARP VINYL

Vinyl softens as it heats. The original siding color was chosen to stay below that point in direct sun. Paint it a darker color and the panels absorb more heat, expand, and can buckle or ripple, especially on south- and west-facing walls.

THE VINYL-SAFE RULE

PREP THAT MAKES IT LAST

  1. Wash thoroughly, preferably with a soft wash. Paint won't stick to algae or chalky oxidation. See soft wash vs. power wash.
  2. Let it dry fully, at least a day or two.
  3. Replace cracked or loose panels first.
  4. Prime only where needed. Clean, sound vinyl usually takes a quality 100% acrylic directly; heavily chalked or porous areas need a bonding primer.
  5. Two coats of 100% acrylic exterior paint, applied in mild weather, not in direct midday sun.

WARRANTY AND HOA

WHAT IT COSTS

HomeTypical DMV Cost (Wash, Prep, 2 Coats)
Townhouse front and rear$2,500 – $5,000
Two-story single-family$5,000 – $10,000
New vinyl siding instead (for comparison)$15,000 – $30,000+

Expect a repaint every 8 to 12 years with quality paint. See the best time to paint an exterior in Maryland.

If the siding is already warped, brittle or cracking in many places, painting won't fix it. That's when replacement is the better investment.
