New TV from the holidays? The mount box says "fits 42 to 85 inch TVs," but TV size isn't really what matters. A mount fits your TV based on three things: the VESA pattern, the weight, and your wall.
1. THE VESA PATTERN
VESA is the spacing of the four threaded holes on the back of the TV, in millimeters, horizontal by vertical. Common patterns:
| TV Size (typical) | Common VESA Patterns |
|---|---|
| 32–43 inch | 100×100, 200×100, 200×200 |
| 50–55 inch | 200×200, 300×300, 400×200 |
| 65 inch | 300×300, 400×300, 400×400 |
| 75–85 inch | 400×400, 600×400 |
Find yours in the TV manual or the manufacturer's spec page. The mount's listed VESA range must include it.
2. THE WEIGHT
Check the TV's weight without the stand. Choose a mount rated well above it, especially for full-motion mounts, which put more leverage on the wall when extended.
3. YOUR WALL
- Stud spacing: most DMV homes have studs 16 inches apart. The mount's wall plate must span two studs for heavier TVs.
- Off-center studs: wider wall plates or sliding brackets let you center the TV between off-center studs.
- Brick, plaster or metal studs: need different hardware. See mounting on brick or without studs.
FIXED, TILT OR FULL-MOTION?
| Mount Type | Best For | Typical Mount Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed / low-profile | Eye-level TVs, clean look | $30 – $90 |
| Tilting | Above eye level, glare reduction | $40 – $120 |
| Full-motion (articulating) | Corners, viewing from multiple spots | $80 – $300 |
| Pull-down | Above fireplaces | $300 – $1,000+ |
INSTALLATION COST
Professional mounting in the DMV usually runs $125 to $250 for a standard drywall install, with wire concealment and masonry extra.
Don't trust the plastic anchors in the mount box for a TV on drywall without studs. That's how TVs end up on the floor.
