TV mounting is one of our most requested small jobs — quick to complete, makes an immediate difference in how a room looks, and something most homeowners want done right the first time. Here's what it costs, the questions worth thinking about before we show up, and one honest opinion about the above-fireplace placement everyone asks about.
WHAT IT COSTS IN THE DMV
| Service | Typical Price |
|---|---|
| Standard wall mount (stud wall) | $75 – $150 |
| Mount + basic wire concealment (cord cover) | $125 – $200 |
| Mount + in-wall wire concealment | $200 – $400 |
| Mount on brick or concrete | $150 – $250 |
| Articulating mount (full motion) | Add $50 – $100 |
| Above-fireplace mount with in-wall wiring | $300 – $550 |
Prices include the labor — you supply the TV and we can supply the mount or use one you already have. We use Milwaukee stud finders and always locate two studs before drilling. A TV falling off a wall is avoidable 100% of the time with the right prep.
ABOVE THE FIREPLACE — THE HONEST TAKE
Almost everyone asks about this placement. We do it all the time, so this isn't a no — but we do tell clients what they're getting into. Mounting a TV above a fireplace puts the screen higher than the ideal viewing angle of roughly eye level when seated. For a 65-inch screen at 7–8 feet of height, you're looking up about 15–20 degrees — not terrible for a movie, noticeable during a 3-hour football game.
If you have a gas fireplace that runs frequently, heat rising toward the screen can shorten the TV's lifespan over time. Wood-burning fireplaces are more of a concern than gas inserts. The fix is a mantel that projects out far enough to deflect heat — at least 6 inches of projection is what we typically look for.
The in-wall wiring for above-fireplace installs requires routing cables through the wall cavity from the TV location down to an outlet near the base. We use low-voltage brush plates and keep everything code-compliant — no exposed power cables inside walls.
WHAT TO DECIDE BEFORE WE ARRIVE
- Height: Where do you want the center of the screen? Eye level when seated is the standard, roughly 42–48 inches from floor to center for most couches.
- Mount type: Fixed (flush, cleanest look), tilting (adjustable up/down), or full-motion/articulating (swings out for flexible viewing from multiple spots). Full-motion mounts are heavier and require beefy studs or a backing board.
- Wires: In-wall routing gives the cleanest look. Surface cord covers are faster and cheaper but visible. Let us know which you want before we start so we have the right materials.
- Connected devices: If you have a soundbar, streaming devices, or cable box, we'll plan how to mount or route those too.
