PAINTING A TWO-STORY
FOYER OR HIGH CEILING

Two-story foyers and stairwell walls are the parts of a house most homeowners leave alone, which is why they're often the dingiest walls in an otherwise freshly painted home. They're also where most of the cost of an interior paint job goes per square foot.

WHY TALL WALLS COST MORE

TYPICAL COSTS

SpaceTypical DMV Cost
Two-story foyer walls only$700 – $1,500
Foyer walls + ceiling$1,000 – $2,000
Stairwell walls to second floor$500 – $1,100
Vaulted great-room ceiling$700 – $1,600
Add a chandelier drop and rehang$150 – $300

THE CHANDELIER QUESTION

Painting around a foyer chandelier means either working carefully around it or lowering it. If the fixture is dated anyway, this is the ideal time to replace it, since the access equipment is already there. See light fixture upgrade costs.

COLOR TIPS

Don't try a two-story foyer on a stepladder and a roller pole. Most painting injuries we hear about come from improvised ladder setups on stairs.
