Hang a chandelier too high and it looks lost against the ceiling. Hang it too low and it blocks the view across the table. The good news: a few simple measurements get it right in almost every dining room.
THE HEIGHT RULE
- 8-foot ceiling: bottom of the chandelier 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop.
- Taller ceilings: add about 3 inches for each extra foot of ceiling height.
- Measure from the table, not the floor. The table is what the light relates to.
| Ceiling Height | Bottom of Fixture Above Table |
|---|---|
| 8 ft | 30 – 36 in |
| 9 ft | 33 – 39 in |
| 10 ft | 36 – 42 in |
HOW BIG SHOULD IT BE?
- Room rule: add the room's length and width in feet; that number in inches is a good fixture diameter. A 12×14 room suits about a 26-inch chandelier.
- Table rule: the fixture should be about one-half to two-thirds the width of the table, and at least 12 inches narrower than the table on each side so nobody hits their head standing up.
- Long tables: use a linear fixture or two smaller pendants instead of one round chandelier.
FOYERS AND STAIRWAYS
In an entry, leave at least 7 feet of clearance under the fixture. In two-story foyers, the chandelier usually hangs at or just above the second-floor window line so it's seen from outside. These fixtures often need a lift or scaffold, which affects cost.
BEFORE YOU BUY
- Weight: heavy chandeliers need an electrical box rated for the weight, attached to framing, not just to the drywall.
- Off-center box: if the box isn't centered over the table, it can be moved, or the fixture can be swagged on a hook.
- Dimmer: always put a dining chandelier on a dimmer, and use bulbs and a dimmer that are compatible (see LED flicker on dimmers).
WHAT IT COSTS
| Job | Typical DMV Installation Cost |
|---|---|
| Replace an existing fixture, standard height | $150 – $300 |
| Heavy chandelier needing a new rated box | $275 – $500 |
| Two-story foyer (lift or scaffold) | $450 – $900 |
New wiring or moving the box is handled by a licensed electrician where required.
Before the installer cuts the chain, have someone sit at the table while the fixture is held at the planned height. Two minutes of checking beats re-hanging it later.
