Flat white ceilings are the default in nearly every DMV home, and they're a safe choice. But they're not the only one. Painting the ceiling to match the walls, or a lighter or darker shade of them, can change how big, tall or cozy a room feels.
YOUR THREE OPTIONS
| Choice | Effect | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Flat white | Bright, neutral, reflects the most light | Most rooms; rentals; low natural light |
| Same color as walls | Edges disappear; room feels enveloping and seamless | Bedrooms, dens, rooms with odd angles or slopes |
| Wall color mixed at 25–50% strength | Softer than white, ties the room together | Rooms where stark white looks harsh against the walls |
| Darker than the walls | Ceiling feels lower and cozier | Tall rooms, dining rooms, libraries |
DOES MATCHING MAKE A ROOM FEEL SMALLER?
Not necessarily. With light and mid-tone colors, painting walls and ceiling the same actually blurs where the wall ends, which can make a low or sloped ceiling feel taller. It's a popular trick in attic bedrooms and Cape Cod upstairs rooms with knee walls and slopes. With very dark colors the room will feel smaller, which is sometimes the point.
WHICH SHEEN?
- Ceilings: flat. Flat paint hides drywall seams and roller marks, which raking light from windows exposes.
- Matching color in two sheens: eggshell walls and flat ceiling in the same color look like one color with a subtle shift. That's normal and usually looks good.
- Bathrooms: use a moisture-resistant ceiling paint; see paint for humid bathrooms.
WHAT ABOUT THE TRIM?
If you're color-drenching walls and ceiling, consider painting the trim the same color too, in semi-gloss. White trim between a matching wall and ceiling draws a line you were trying to remove. For classic white trim, see the best whites for trim.
WHAT IT COSTS
Painting a ceiling a color instead of white usually costs about the same per square foot, typically $1.25 to $2.50 per sq ft in the DMV. The real cost difference is coverage: going from white to a color, or back, may need an extra coat.
Test on the ceiling, not the wall. Paint a 2×2 foot sample on poster board and hold it overhead. Ceiling colors look darker than the same color on a wall because they receive less direct light.
