THE BEST WHITE PAINT
FOR TRIM AND DOORS

“Just paint the trim white” sounds simple until you open a fan deck with dozens of whites that all look the same on the card and completely different on the wall. The right trim white depends on your wall colors, your light and the look you want.

WARM, COOL OR NEUTRAL?

WhiteLooksPairs With
Bright neutral whiteCrisp and clean; the default trim whiteMost wall colors, especially grays and blues
Warm white (creamy undertone)Soft and invitingBeige, greige, warm wood floors
Cool white (blue or gray undertone)Sharp, modern, a little starkCool grays, modern spaces with strong daylight

Among the whites DMV homeowners ask for most are Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace and White Dove, and Sherwin-Williams Extra White and Pure White. Chantilly Lace and Extra White read crisp and clean; White Dove and Pure White are softer.

HOW TO CHOOSE

SHEEN AND PRODUCT

Semi-gloss is the traditional trim sheen: durable and easy to wipe. Satin gives a softer, more modern look and hides imperfections on older trim. For doors and trim that get handled, a self-leveling enamel or urethane-modified trim paint brushes out smooth and stays tough. See our paint finish guide.

Painting walls and trim the same white, in different sheens, is a clean modern look that makes small rooms feel larger. Satin or eggshell on walls, semi-gloss on trim.

If the trim itself is thin or dated, painting may not be enough. See our crown molding and trim cost guide.
