CEILING CRACK THAT
KEEPS COMING BACK

You patch it, you paint it, and next winter the same crack shows up along the same ceiling seam. That pattern tells you the crack isn't a workmanship mistake. Something is moving, and the patch can't flex with it.

CAUSE 1: TRUSS UPLIFT

In homes with roof trusses, the bottom chord of the truss sits in the cold attic insulation in winter while the top chord warms in the sun. The difference makes the truss bow upward slightly, lifting the ceiling away from interior walls. The tell-tale sign: a crack where the ceiling meets an interior wall, worse in winter, nearly closed in summer.

CAUSE 2: FAILED TAPE JOINT

A crack running straight across the middle of the ceiling usually follows a drywall seam. If the original tape was bedded with too little compound, it loses its bond and the seam opens. Often you'll see a slight ridge or loose tape.

CAUSE 3: MOISTURE OR SETTLING

Cracks that branch, spread from a corner of a room, or come with sagging can mean a leak above, overloaded framing or foundation movement. Those need a look at the cause, not just the drywall.

FIXES THAT LAST

CauseFix
Truss upliftRe-fasten ceiling drywall so it floats near the wall, then add crown molding attached to the ceiling only, or a flexible corner joint
Failed tapeCut out loose tape, re-tape with mesh or paper bedded properly, feather wide
Small hairline seamFiberglass mesh tape and setting compound instead of premixed
Leak or structureFix the source first, then repair the board

WHY CAULK SOMETIMES WINS

For truss-uplift corners, a paintable flexible caulk or elastomeric patch at the wall-ceiling joint often outlasts rigid compound. It's not a "real" drywall repair, but it flexes, and that's the point.

TYPICAL COSTS

Most recurring-crack repairs run $200 to $450 for a single room ceiling, including repainting the ceiling. Adding crown molding as a permanent cover runs $8 to $15 per linear foot installed and painted. See crown molding costs.
