REMOVING WALLPAPER FROM
UNPRIMED DRYWALL

If you're scraping wallpaper and brown paper keeps coming off with it, the wallpaper was probably hung on bare, unprimed drywall. The paste bonded to the drywall's paper face, so now the two want to come off together. This is common in DMV homes papered in the 1980s and 90s. It can be fixed, but the order of steps matters.

HOW TO TELL

GENTLE REMOVAL

  1. Peel the top layer dry. Most vinyl papers separate, leaving a paper backing on the wall.
  2. Soak the backing with warm water and a little wallpaper remover. Let it soften for 10 to 15 minutes. Don't flood the wall; saturated drywall paper tears more easily.
  3. Scrape at a low angle with a wide, slightly dull blade. Work small sections.
  4. Avoid aggressive scoring tools. On unprimed drywall they puncture the face paper and make every hole a repair.
  5. Wash off paste residue and let the wall dry completely, at least overnight.

REPAIRING TORN PAPER

This is where most DIY jobs go wrong. If you put water-based joint compound or latex primer directly on torn drywall paper, the paper absorbs the water and bubbles. Instead:

  1. Cut away any loose, lifting paper.
  2. Seal the torn areas (or the whole wall) with an oil-based or shellac-based primer, or a drywall sealer made for damaged paper.
  3. Skim coat the wall smooth once the sealer is dry.
  4. Prime again, then paint.

WHAT IT COSTS

JobTypical DMV Cost
Wallpaper removal, wall in good shape underneath$1.00 – $2.00 per sq ft of wall
Removal plus sealing and skim coat (torn drywall)$3.00 – $5.50 per sq ft
Typical bathroom, removal and repair$500 – $1,200

If the wall is badly torn everywhere, replacing the drywall can cost about the same as repairing it and gives a better result. We'll tell you which makes sense once the first section is open.

Hanging new paper? Prime first. Here's why it matters: wallpaper vs. paint.
