Orange peel and knockdown textures were standard in a lot of DMV construction from the 1980s onward. Many homeowners now want the smooth, modern wall look, especially with darker paint colors, which show texture more. Getting there is called skim coating, and it's mostly a labor cost.
WHAT A SKIM COAT IS
A skim coat is a thin layer of joint compound troweled or rolled over the entire wall, then sanded smooth. Two coats are usually needed to bury orange peel; heavy knockdown may take three. The result matches what the drywall industry calls a Level 5 finish, the smoothest grade.
THE PROCESS
- Room emptied or furniture centered and covered; floors protected.
- Heavy texture knocked down with a scraper.
- Walls primed if the paint is glossy or the compound won't bond well.
- First skim coat; dries overnight.
- Second coat; dries, then sanded with dust control.
- Primed with a high-build primer, then two coats of paint.
Expect 3 to 4 days for one room and about a week for a main floor. Sanding creates fine dust; good crews use vacuum sanders and seal off the area.

IS IT WORTH IT?
- Worth it: main living areas, rooms getting dark or high-sheen paint, before a sale where the market favors updated finishes.
- Maybe not: closets, basements, rental units where durability matters more than looks, and rooms about to get wallpaper.
