PAINTING A STEEL OR
FIBERGLASS FRONT DOOR

A freshly painted front door is one of the cheapest curb appeal upgrades there is. Most DMV homes have a steel or fiberglass entry door, and each needs slightly different prep. Get it right and the finish lasts years; get it wrong and it chips at the handle within a season.

WHICH DOOR DO YOU HAVE?

PREP BY DOOR TYPE

Steel DoorFiberglass Door
Clean with degreaserClean with degreaser
Sand rust and chipped spots to bare metalLight scuff sand; don't sand through the grain texture
Rust-inhibiting metal primer on bare spotsBonding primer if factory finish is slick
Scuff sand everything else lightlyWipe with a damp cloth to remove dust

Remove the hardware and weatherstripping where possible, or mask carefully. Paint on hardware is the giveaway of a rushed job.

WHAT PAINT TO USE

THE STORM DOOR PROBLEM

A full-glass storm door in front of a dark entry door can trap a lot of heat when the sun hits it. Dark colors in that space can blister paint, warp vinyl trim and, on some doors, void the manufacturer's warranty. If your door faces south or west and has a storm door, choose a lighter color or a storm door with a screen or vented panel. More in our storm door guide.

WHAT IT COSTS

JobTypical DMV Cost
Paint front door, exterior side only$200 – $350
Door, frame and trim, both sides$350 – $600
Door with sidelights and transom$450 – $850

Plan for the door to stay open or propped for a few hours between coats, and avoid closing it hard against fresh paint for a day.

If the door is dented, rusted through or drafty, painting won't fix it. See our door installation cost guide for replacement prices.
