CAN YOU PAINT OUTSIDE
IN COLD WEATHER?

Every October, homeowners ask if it's too late to paint the house before winter. In most of the DMV, mid-October through early November is still workable, but the margin gets thinner every week and the rules change.

THE MINIMUM TEMPERATURES

PaintMinimum Air & Surface Temp
Standard exterior latex50°F
Low-temperature latex (most premium lines)35°F
Oil-based / alkyd40 to 45°F

Those numbers apply to the air and the surface, and they have to hold for several hours after application, not just at the moment the brush touches the wall.

THE REAL ENEMY: DEW

In late fall the bigger problem is moisture, not cold. Evenings drop toward the dew point, and dew settles on fresh paint before it has skinned over. The result is surfactant leaching (sticky tan or brown streaks), poor adhesion and a flat, blotchy finish.

FOLLOW THE SUN

Shaded north walls stay colder and wetter all day. A good late-season crew paints the south and west sides in the afternoon and the east side late morning, and saves the north side for the warmest day of the week.

WHAT STILL MAKES SENSE IN NOVEMBER

A full exterior repaint in late November in Maryland or Northern Virginia is a gamble. It's usually better to prime the problem areas now and book the full job for April or May.

If a contractor is happy to paint your whole house in 40-degree drizzle, that's a red flag. Ask which product they're using and its minimum application temperature.
