Grasscloth is a natural wallcovering woven from fibers like seagrass, jute, sisal or arrowroot on a paper backing. It adds texture and warmth that no paint can match. It's also one of the most demanding wallpapers to install, and it behaves differently from patterned paper.
THE SEAMS WILL SHOW
Because it's a natural material, color varies between rolls and even across a single roll. Seams don't disappear the way printed wallpaper does. That's part of the look, and a good installer:
- Orders all rolls from the same dye lot.
- Reverse-hangs alternating strips if the manufacturer recommends it, to reduce edge-to-edge shading.
- Plans seam locations so the most visible wall has the best panels.
- Starts in the least visible corner.

Grasscloth stains with water and can't be scrubbed. Vinyl "faux grasscloth" is a good alternative for bathrooms and high-traffic areas.
WALL PREP
Walls must be smooth and primed with a wallpaper primer. Grasscloth shows wall color through thin weaves, so primer is often tinted to match. Paste goes on the backing only; paste on the fibers stains them.

PEEL-AND-STICK GRASSCLOTH?
There are peel-and-stick grasscloth-look products, mostly printed vinyl. Easier to install, removable, much cheaper. True texture is limited. See does peel-and-stick damage walls.
Order 10 to 15 percent extra grasscloth. Matching a later order to the same color is nearly impossible.
