HOW TO FIX A
DOORKNOB HOLE IN DRYWALL

A round hole behind a door is the single most common drywall repair we make in DMV rentals and family homes. It's a quick fix when done right, and a lumpy, visible one when it isn't. The method depends on the size of the hole.

PICK THE METHOD BY SIZE

Hole SizeBest Repair
Dent or crushed surface, no holeFill with compound, two thin coats
Up to about 4 inchesSelf-adhesive mesh patch or a “California patch”
4 to 8 inchesCalifornia patch or a backed drywall piece
Larger, or framing damagedCut back to studs and install new drywall

THE CALIFORNIA PATCH

It's our go-to for typical doorknob holes because it's flat and strong:

  1. Square up the hole with a drywall saw.
  2. Cut a drywall piece 2 inches larger than the hole on every side.
  3. Score the back, snap off the gypsum around the edges, and keep the paper face intact, leaving a plug with a paper “flange.”
  4. Butter the hole edges with compound, press the plug in, and smooth the paper flange flat.
  5. Two more thin coats, feathered wide, then sand.

Mesh patch kits work too, but the mesh sits on top of the wall and needs wider feathering to hide the bump.

THE PART PEOPLE SKIP

STOP IT FROM HAPPENING AGAIN

A $5 door stop installed with the repair is the best money in this whole job.

WHAT IT COSTS

A professional doorknob hole repair, including priming, texture and paint, typically costs $150 to $300 in the DMV. Several holes in one visit bring the per-hole price down. For a full price list see our drywall repair cost guide.
