COUNTERTOP OVERHANG
WITHOUT SUPPORT

A kitchen island or peninsula with seating needs an overhang, and stone countertops are heavy and can crack if overhung too far without support. The safe distance depends on the material, its thickness, and how much of the slab sits on the cabinets.

TYPICAL UNSUPPORTED LIMITS

MaterialCommon Unsupported Overhang
3 cm (1¼″) quartzUp to about 10–12 in
3 cm graniteUp to about 10 in
2 cm (¾″) stoneUp to about 6 in
Marble and softer stonesLess; follow the fabricator
Butcher blockAbout 10–12 in, depending on thickness

These are general guidelines. The slab manufacturer and your fabricator's specs take priority. A common rule: at least two-thirds of the slab's depth should rest on the cabinets.

HOW MUCH OVERHANG FOR SEATING?

Counter HeightRecommended Knee Space
Table height (30 in)18 in
Counter height (36 in)15 in
Bar height (42 in)12 in

Notice the problem: comfortable seating at standard 36-inch counters wants about 15 inches, more than most stone should overhang unsupported. That's why supports matter.

SUPPORT OPTIONS

Hidden supports must be in place before the countertop is templated, so plan them with the island build, not after.
