BUTCHER BLOCK COUNTERTOPS:
PROS, CONS & SEALING

Wood countertops bring warmth that stone can't, and they're popular on kitchen islands paired with painted cabinets. They're also more forgiving on a budget. The trade-off is maintenance, especially near the sink.

PROS

CONS

OIL OR SEALED FINISH?

FinishProsCons
Food-safe oil (mineral oil, oil/wax blends)Easy to refresh, food-safe for cuttingRe-oil monthly at first, then every few months
Penetrating hardening oil (tung, Danish oil)More water-resistant, still natural lookLonger cure time
Waterborne polyurethaneMost water-resistant, low maintenanceCan't cut on it; scratches need refinishing

For islands used as prep surfaces, oil is common. For counters around a sink, a sealed finish holds up far better.
