HOW TO FIX
SQUEAKY STAIRS

A squeaky step is rarely a structural problem. It's wood rubbing against wood: a tread moving against a riser, a stringer or a nail. In the DMV it often gets worse in winter, when dry heated air shrinks the lumber and opens tiny gaps. The fix depends on whether you can get under the stairs.

FIND THE SQUEAK

Have someone step slowly on the noisy tread while you listen and watch. Squeaks at the front edge usually come from the tread rubbing the riser below it. Squeaks at the ends usually come from the tread moving on the stringer.

FIX FROM BELOW (BEST)

If the underside of the stairs is open, from a basement or a closet, this is the cleanest fix:

FIX FROM ABOVE

A squeak along with a tread that visibly moves, a cracked tread, or a loose railing is worth a closer look. Those are safety issues, not just noise.

WHAT IT COSTS

Quieting a few squeaky stairs is typically a one- to two-hour handyman visit. If you're planning to replace the carpet anyway, it's the ideal time: the stairs are open and every squeak can be fixed properly before new treads go on. See our carpet-to-hardwood stairs guide.
