REPLACING A FLUORESCENT
KITCHEN LIGHT WITH LED

The long fluorescent box light with a plastic diffuser is a signature of 1980s and 90s DMV kitchens. It flickers, hums, takes a second to start and casts flat, cold light. Replacing it is one of the fastest kitchen upgrades there is.

OPTION 1: LED FLUSH MOUNT OR PANEL

Remove the fluorescent fixture and install a slim LED flush mount or panel on the same electrical box.

OPTION 2: RECESSED LED LIGHTS

Replace the single box with 4 to 8 slim recessed LED wafer lights spread across the kitchen. Much better, more even lighting with no shadows at the counters. See how many recessed lights you need.

OPTION 3: LED TUBES (BALLAST BYPASS)

Keep the fixture and swap fluorescent tubes for LED tubes, removing the ballast. Cheapest, but you keep the dated look. Better suited to garages, basements and utility rooms than kitchens.

TYPICAL COSTS

OptionTypical DMV Cost (installed)
LED flush mount swap$175 – $375 + fixture
Ceiling patch and paint after removal$200 – $500
4–6 recessed LED wafers$700 – $1,500
Recessed lights + dimmer + patch$1,000 – $2,200
LED tube conversion$100 – $200

Wiring work is performed by a licensed electrician where required.

Choose LEDs around 3000K (warm white) for kitchens, and add a dimmer. It makes a bigger difference than the fixture style.
