POWDER ROOM
REMODEL COST

Powder rooms are small, guest-facing and free of showers and steam, which makes them the most forgiving room in the house to remodel. A modest budget goes a long way, and bold design choices that would be risky in a full bath work beautifully here.

TYPICAL COSTS

ScopeWhat's IncludedTypical DMV Cost
Cosmetic refreshPaint or wallpaper, mirror, light, faucet, hardware$1,500 – $3,500
Mid-range updateNew vanity, toilet, flooring, lighting, paint$5,000 – $9,500

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

UPGRADES THAT PUNCH ABOVE THEIR COST

  1. Wallpaper. A bold pattern turns a forgettable half-bath into a design moment. See wallpaper vs. paint.
  2. Wall-hung toilet or comfort-height toilet for a cleaner look.
  3. A statement mirror with good sconces.
  4. Wainscoting or board-and-batten on the lower half of the walls.
  5. Upgraded faucet and hardware in brass, black or nickel.

WHAT DRIVES COST UP

TIMELINE

A cosmetic refresh takes 2 to 4 days. A mid-range update usually 1 to 2 weeks. A full gut with plumbing changes and permits, 3 to 5 weeks.

Powder rooms add more perceived value than their square footage suggests, because every guest uses them. It's one of our favorite small projects before a home sale.
