PAINTING WOOD
PANELING THE RIGHT WAY

Dark wood paneling is common in DMV basements, dens and split-level family rooms. Painting it is one of the cheapest ways to brighten a room, as long as you prime it properly. Skip the primer and the wood tannins bleed through as yellow-brown blotches.

FIRST: REAL WOOD OR PRINTED?

Some paneling is solid wood or wood veneer. A lot of 1970s paneling is a photo print of wood on hardboard. Both can be painted, but the printed kind is slick and needs a bonding primer.

THE PROCESS

  1. Clean. Paneling collects decades of grime and smoke. Degrease and let dry.
  2. Scuff. Light sand with 180 grit to dull the finish.
  3. Prime. Shellac-based or oil-based stain-blocking primer. Water-based primer usually lets tannins bleed.
  4. Caulk the seams at corners and trim.
  5. Paint. Two coats of eggshell or satin.

THE GROOVE DECISION

Filled grooves sometimes crack as the panels expand and contract with seasonal humidity, especially in basements. Most people like the painted-groove look better than a half-hidden one.

COST COMPARISON

Job (12×16 room)Typical DMV Cost
Prime and paint paneling$650 – $1,200
Fill grooves + prime + paint$1,200 – $2,000
Remove paneling, hang and finish drywall, paint$2,500 – $4,500

Before removing paneling in a basement, check what's behind it. We often find paneling nailed directly to block walls, which means new framing is needed before drywall can go up.
