A Murphy bed turns a home office or small guest room into a dual-purpose space. It's also one of the heaviest, most complex pieces of furniture most people will ever assemble, and it has to be anchored correctly because it pivots off the wall.
WHAT'S INVOLVED
- Assembly: cabinet, bed frame, mattress platform, piston or spring mechanism. Many kits have 100+ parts.
- Anchoring: the cabinet is fastened to wall studs (or the floor, depending on the design). When the bed lowers, the weight shifts outward; anchoring prevents tipping.
- Mechanism adjustment: springs or pistons are tensioned so the bed lifts smoothly and stays down when open.
- Side cabinets or shelving if part of the system.

CHECK BEFORE YOU ORDER
- Ceiling height: a vertical queen needs about 85 to 90 inches of height.
- Floor clearance: open bed length plus walking space, usually 7.5 feet or more.
- Wall type: wood studs are ideal. Plaster, metal studs or concrete need different fasteners.
- Baseboards: many designs require removing a section so the cabinet sits flush.
- Outlets, vents and switches behind the cabinet.
- Mattress thickness: most limit it to 10 to 12 inches.
Never skip the wall anchoring on a Murphy bed, even if the instructions call it optional for your model. Tip-over is the main safety risk.
