TURNING A CLOSET
INTO A HOME OFFICE

Not every DMV home has a spare bedroom for an office, especially townhouses and condos. A reach-in closet, the one in a guest room or the hall closet nobody uses, can become a surprisingly good workspace. The trick is treating it like a small room, not a shelf with a chair in front of it.

WILL IT FIT?

THE BUILD-OUT

ItemTypical DMV Cost
Remove doors, patch and paint the closet$300 – $800
Built-in desk surface and shelving$600 – $2,500
New outlet(s) inside the closet$200 – $500 each
LED strip or puck lighting under shelves$200 – $700
Wallpaper or accent paint on the back wall$150 – $600

DETAILS THAT MAKE IT WORK

Plan the desk height for the chair you'll actually use: most people are comfortable with a desk surface around 28–30 inches high. Built-ins are hard to adjust later.
