HOW MANY COATS TO COVER
A DARK PAINT COLOR

Accent walls in navy, deep red, charcoal and forest green were everywhere a few years ago. Now a lot of DMV homeowners and landlords want them back to a light neutral. Covering a dark color is doable, but it rarely happens in two coats of paint alone.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Going From → ToTypical Approach
Mid-tone to light2 coats of quality paint
Dark (navy, charcoal) to light1 coat gray-tinted primer + 2 coats
Red, orange or bright yellow to light1 to 2 coats tinted primer + 2 coats
Dark to another darkUsually 2 coats, tinted toward the new color

WHY RED IS THE HARDEST

Reds and oranges use pigments that are less opaque, and they bleed through light paint as a pink or peach cast. Even "paint and primer in one" products struggle. A primer tinted gray (a shade the paint store will match to your topcoat) blocks the color far better than white primer.

WHY NOT JUST USE PAINT-AND-PRIMER?

Self-priming paints are fine over clean, similar colors. Over a deep color they often need three or four coats to stop the old color from ghosting through. Primer is cheaper per gallon and builds hide faster, so primer plus two coats usually costs less in material and time than four coats of finish paint.

WATCH FOR THE EDGES

The giveaway on a bad cover-up job is the cut line: a faint dark shadow along the ceiling, corners and trim. Each coat has to be cut in, not just rolled. On a dark-to-white job, that's three cut-in passes per wall.

WHAT IT ADDS TO THE COST

Expect an extra primer coat to add roughly 20 to 35 percent to the labor for that wall or room, plus the cost of primer. For a single 12-foot accent wall that's often $75 to $150 more. For a whole room painted a dark color, it can add $150 to $350.

Tip for landlords: if a tenant painted a bedroom a dark color without permission, document it with photos at move-out. Restoring the original neutral is usually a chargeable item, not normal wear. See our Maryland wear-and-tear guide.
