Narrow galley kitchens are everywhere in DC rowhouses, Arlington and Silver Spring condos, and Prince George's townhouses. Chefs actually love the galley layout because everything is a step or two away. The challenge is making it feel bright and open instead of like a hallway.
LAYOUT IDEAS
- Keep the work triangle tight. Sink on one side, range on the other, fridge at an end.
- Open one end. Removing a wall or widening an opening at the end of the galley often changes the whole feel. See our open concept guide.
- One wall of uppers, open shelves on the other keeps storage while relieving the tunnel effect.
- Minimum 42 inches between counters for one cook, 48 inches for two.
STORAGE TRICKS
- Ceiling-height upper cabinets add a full shelf of storage.
- Deep drawers instead of base cabinet doors make every inch reachable.
- Pull-out pantry in a 9 to 15 inch gap next to the fridge.
- Toe-kick drawers for sheet pans and serving trays.
- Rail systems on the backsplash for utensils and spices.
MAKE IT FEEL BIGGER
- Light cabinets and countertops, or light uppers with darker lowers.
- A continuous backsplash in a glossy tile that bounces light.
- Under-cabinet LED lighting on both runs. See under-cabinet lighting options.
- Handleless or slim hardware so nothing catches in the narrow aisle.
- One floor material running the full length.
TYPICAL COSTS
| Scope | Typical DMV Cost |
|---|---|
| Refresh (paint cabinets, counters, backsplash, lighting) | $8,000 – $16,000 |
| Mid-range remodel (new cabinets, quartz, appliances) | $25,000 – $45,000 |
| Remodel with wall removal or end opening | $40,000 – $70,000+ |
CONDO NOTES
Condo buildings often limit work hours, require board approval, a certificate of insurance and sometimes restrict moving plumbing. Get the rules early. See HOA approval for home projects.
In a galley kitchen, lighting does more for the space than almost any other upgrade per dollar.
