WHY DRYWALL PATCHES
SHOW THROUGH PAINT

You can feel nothing, the patch looked perfect, and yet once the paint dries there it is: a dull square on the wall that catches the light. Patches show for three main reasons, and each one has a different fix.

REASON 1: FLASHING

Joint compound absorbs paint differently than painted drywall around it. The patch dries flatter (or shinier) than the rest of the wall. This is the most common reason, and it's worst with eggshell and satin finishes.

Fix: Spot-prime the patch with a drywall primer, then paint the whole wall corner to corner, not just the patch.

REASON 2: TEXTURE MISMATCH

Rolled paint leaves a slight stipple. Sanded compound is glass-smooth. Even after painting, the smooth patch reads differently.

Fix: Roll primer on the patch with the same nap roller used for the wall, so it picks up texture. On walls with orange peel, use a spray texture to match.

REASON 3: THE HALO RIDGE

If compound wasn't feathered wide enough, the patch sits slightly proud of the wall and casts a shadow ring in side light.

Fix: Feather each coat wider, 8 to 12 inches beyond the repair for a small hole, more for larger ones. Check with a work light held flat against the wall.

WHY TOUCH-UP PAINT FAILS

Even with the same can, touch-up paint often looks different because the old paint has aged and faded, and because a small brushed spot dries differently from a rolled wall. For anything bigger than a nail hole, plan on painting the wall to the corners.

THE PRO SEQUENCE

  1. Patch, let dry, sand
  2. Second and third thin coats, feathered wider each time
  3. Check with raking light
  4. Spot-prime with roller
  5. Paint the entire wall, two coats

If you're selling or turning over a rental, schedule drywall repairs before painting, not after. Touching up patches on finished walls is where flashing shows most.
