REPLACING A TUB SURROUND:
TILE VS. ACRYLIC

The walls around a tub take a beating. Dated tile, cracked acrylic, failing caulk or mold behind old panels are all reasons to replace the surround, and you don't always need to replace the tub with it.

THREE MAIN OPTIONS

OptionTypical DMV Cost (installed)Lifespan
One-piece or 3-piece acrylic/fiberglass kit$1,400 – $2,80010–20 years
Solid-surface or cultured marble panels$2,800 – $5,00020+ years
Tile over cement board with waterproofing$3,200 – $6,50025+ years

ACRYLIC KITS

Pros: fastest install (often 1 to 2 days), no grout, easy cleaning, lowest cost. Cons: can look builder-grade, may flex or crack if not fully supported, limited design options. Good choice for rentals and quick turnovers.

SOLID-SURFACE PANELS

Large panels of cultured marble, quartz composite or solid surface, cut to fit. Few seams, very easy to clean, more upscale than acrylic. A nice middle ground for homeowners who hate scrubbing grout.

TILE

The most design flexibility and longest lifespan. It needs a proper waterproofing system behind it, which is where many old surrounds failed. See shower waterproofing. More grout to maintain, but modern grouts and sealers help.

CAN YOU KEEP THE TUB?

Yes, if the tub is in good shape and level. Surrounds can be replaced without removing the tub. If the tub is chipped or stained, consider reglazing at the same time, or replacement if it's damaged or you're switching to a shower.

WHAT YOU FIND BEHIND THE WALL

Older surrounds sometimes hide mold, rotted studs or soft drywall behind them. Budget a contingency of $300 to $900 for repairs found during demo.

Avoid installing a new surround directly over old tile with adhesive. It hides problems, and moisture trapped between the layers usually comes back as mold.
