REMOVING KITCHEN SOFFITS:
WHAT'S INSIDE AND WHAT IT COSTS

The boxed-in bulkhead between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling is a hallmark of DMV kitchens built from the 1970s through the 1990s. Removing it lets cabinets run to the ceiling, and that's one of the most effective ways to make a kitchen feel taller, newer and more custom. Whether it's a quick job or a bigger one depends entirely on what's inside.

WHAT'S USUALLY INSIDE

ContentsWhat It MeansTypical Added Cost
Nothing (decorative)Easy demolition and ceiling patch$500 – $1,500
Range hood or bath fan ductReroute the duct, often through the cabinet or ceiling$600 – $2,000
HVAC supply or return ductRerouting is more involved; sometimes a smaller soffit stays$1,500 – $4,000+
Plumbing or drain linesRelocation by a licensed plumber$1,000 – $4,000+
Electrical wiringUsually simple to relocate by a licensed electrician$300 – $1,000

HOW TO FIND OUT

WHAT TO DO WITH THE SPACE

If you're painting or refacing existing cabinets instead of replacing them, removing the soffit leaves a gap above the cabinets. A matching panel, stacked open shelf or crown detail can close it so the cabinets still look floor-to-ceiling.

Soffit removal is usually done as part of a cabinet or full kitchen project; see our kitchen remodel cost guide and paint vs. reface vs. replace guide.
