WHAT GROUT COLOR
FOR WHITE SUBWAY TILE?

White subway tile is the most popular tile in DMV kitchens and bathrooms for good reason: it's affordable, timeless and goes with everything. The grout is where you make it your own. Grout color changes the whole look, and the wrong choice can mean scrubbing lines every week.

THE FOUR MAIN CHOICES

GroutLookMaintenance
Bright whiteSeamless and clean; tile reads as one surfaceShows every stain, especially behind the stove
Light or warm graySoft outline, still calmThe most forgiving everyday choice
CharcoalDefined, graphic, emphasizes the patternHides dirt well
BlackHigh contrast, bold, a little industrialHides dirt; can show white mineral haze

HOW TO CHOOSE

THE GROUT TYPE MATTERS MORE

Standard cement grout is porous and needs sealing to resist stains. Epoxy and high-performance urethane or single-component grouts resist stains without sealing, hold color better and are worth the small extra cost in showers and behind cooktops. Ask your installer which they're using.

Before deciding, ask for a sample board: a few tiles grouted in the two colors you're torn between, viewed in your actual kitchen or bathroom light. Grout looks different on the color chart than on the wall.

GROUT WIDTH

Subway tile is usually set with a thin 1/16 or 1/8 inch joint. Thinner joints make the color choice less dramatic; wider joints make it louder. With dark grout, consistent joint width matters even more, because every wobble shows. For overall pricing, see our backsplash installation cost guide.
