CURBLESS SHOWER
COST IN THE DMV

A curbless shower has no step at all: the bathroom floor flows straight into the shower. It looks clean and modern, and it's the most accessible option for aging in place. It's also one of the more involved bathroom projects, because the shower floor still has to slope to a drain.

THE CORE CHALLENGE

A standard shower floor sits 2 to 4 inches higher than the bathroom floor, inside a curb. To remove the curb, the shower floor has to drop below the bathroom floor so it can slope down to the drain. That means one of:

On a second floor with wood joists, recessing usually means modifying the framing. On a basement slab, it means cutting and trenching the concrete.

LINEAR DRAINS HELP

A linear (trench) drain along one wall lets the floor slope in one direction instead of four. That allows larger tiles, a shallower recess and a cleaner look. It costs more than a center drain.

TYPICAL COSTS

ScopeTypical DMV Cost
Low-curb walk-in shower (for comparison)$9,000 – $16,000
Curbless shower, wood-framed floor$14,000 – $24,000
Curbless shower on a slab$13,000 – $22,000
Full bath remodel with curbless shower$24,000 – $42,000+

Costs rise with structural work, glass panels, heated floors and large-format tile.

WATER STAYS IN WITH:

If you want curbless, plan for it at the start of a full remodel. Retrofitting it into an existing shower without touching the floor structure usually isn't possible.
