CAN YOU PAINT LAMINATE OR
THERMOFOIL CABINETS?

Builder-grade kitchens in DMV townhouses and condos from the 1990s and 2000s often have laminate or thermofoil cabinets. They don't look like wood because they aren't. Whether you can paint them depends on which one you have and what condition it's in.

HOW TO TELL THEM APART

LAMINATE: USUALLY YES

Laminate can be painted if it's flat and well-bonded.

  1. Degrease thoroughly.
  2. Scuff sand lightly with 220 grit.
  3. Prime with a bonding primer made for slick surfaces (shellac-based or urethane-modified bonding primer).
  4. Finish with a cabinet-grade waterborne enamel.

Chipped edges with exposed particleboard should be filled and sealed first, or they'll swell.

THERMOFOIL: USUALLY NO

If thermofoil is already peeling, paint won't hold it down. The film keeps lifting with heat and takes the paint with it. Intact thermofoil can technically be painted with a bonding primer, but the result is fragile, especially near heat sources.

Better options for peeling thermofoil:

COST COMPARISON

OptionTypical DMV Cost (avg kitchen)
Paint laminate cabinets$3,200 – $5,500
New doors + paint boxes$5,500 – $9,500
Full refacing$7,000 – $13,000
New cabinets (installed)$12,000 – $30,000+

We'll always tell you if your cabinets aren't good candidates for paint. A paint job on peeling thermofoil is money spent twice.
