HOW LONG DOES CABINET PAINT
TAKE TO CURE?

Freshly painted cabinets look done the day they go back up, and that's exactly when most finishes get damaged. Cabinet enamels go through three stages, and only the last one is as tough as the finish will ever be.

THE THREE STAGES

StageTypical TimingWhat It Means
Dry to the touch1–4 hoursDust won't stick; still soft underneath
Ready to recoat / rehangAbout 12–48 hoursCan be handled carefully and reinstalled
Fully curedAbout 2–4 weeks (some products longer)Reaches full hardness and scrub resistance

Exact times depend on the product and the conditions. Cool temperatures and high humidity, both common in DMV kitchens, slow curing down.

THE FIRST FEW WEEKS

A good test of cure: press a fingernail gently into an inside edge of a door after a couple of weeks. If it leaves a mark, give it more time before heavy use.

WHY THE PRODUCT MATTERS

Wall paint is not cabinet paint. Cabinet-grade enamels, often urethane-modified or hybrid alkyd formulas, level out smoothly and cure much harder. Combined with proper prep (degreasing, sanding and a bonding primer), they're what makes painted cabinets last for years instead of chipping within months. Our cabinet painting cost guide covers the full process and pricing.
